Use of Music[]

Active Music Making: The creation of live music by the patient involving any means of intentional sound production that does not involve the voice. Music making includes all instrument playing and body percussion, music lessons and music ensembles, and also improvised, written, or rehearsed music.

Background Music: The use of passive music listening while a non-musical activity is being implemented.

Lyric Analysis and Lyric Divergence: The expansion from existing songs or lyrics to any broader use, individualized topics, or generalized discussion.

Movement to Music: The physical use of the body with the incorporation of music. Movement may be stretching, exercise, movement games, and even dancing video games.

Multisensory Use of Music: The therapeutic application of music videos, aroma drums, tactile stimulation, video games, or any other activity stimulating multiple basic senses.

Music and Guided Imagery: The therapeutic use of guiding mental images with specific and sequenced music selections.

Music as Environmental Control: The intentional use of music as a prompt, structure, reinforcement, or reward in order to accomplish behavioral goals.

Music Games: The use of music, musical activities, or musical trivia as the structure or content of competitive activities.

Music Listening: The active attention to auditory stimuli by the patient.

Singing: The activation of the vocal folds by the patient, without an external instrument of any kind, in any intentionally musical way. This includes vocal fry, modal voice, falsetto, and whistle, and specifically chanting, toning, beat boxing, rapping, singing, or humming.

Songwriting and Lyric Convergence: The utilization of thoughts, experiences, and any variety of linguistic inputs from the patient and narrowing these verbalizations to some specific, unified, and concrete product.
